Obituary: Marek Chełchowski (1957–2025)

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Marek Chełchowski, who passed away on 9 August 2025 in Wrocław at the age of 68. His life was marked by tireless commitment to the rights of the Sorbs and Wends in Germany and Poland. Born in 1957, he most recently lived in Felixsee in Lower Lusatia. As an independent entrepreneur, Marek Chełchowski combined drive with a deep passion for the cultural and political promotion of the Sorbian/Wendish community.

He was actively involved in the Sorbian-Wendish movement for 20 years. His work began in the Wendish People's Party, where, among other things, he initiated petitions to the European Parliament. As a member of the Lusatian Alliance and president of the Union of Lusatians in Poland (Łużycki Alians), he was passionately committed to the recognition of the Sorbs and Wends as a minority in Poland as well. Above all, he strove to secure the financial foundations for the reviving and developing Sorbian-Wendish organisations and thus preserve the cultural identity of the Sorbs and Wends. He was very fond of the Serbski Sejm.

His international commitment to Sorbian-Wendish issues will never be forgotten.

On behalf of the Serbski Sejm
